Nigeria recently passed the discrimination against persons with disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018, which heraids in a new era of prioritization of disability right by various stakeholders, including duty bearers. The Act makes provisions for the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in the mainstream of life in Nigeria, and for the establishment of a National Commission for Persons With Disabilities(NCPWD) to implement the provision of the Act. The NCPWD, established in August 2020, under the leadership of a Governing Council and an Executive Secretary, who manages its daily operations.
The NCPWD plan provides a framework for disability right that will guide duty bearers and all relevant stakeholders' disability-inclusive and disability-specific intervention during the period 2022-2026. It provides a framework for:
Mobilizing resources for disability rights.
Guiding the provision of inclusive basic services, disability-specific services; coordination of the development of annual work plans and budgets mapping, aligning, and coordinating the partner support for disability right in Nigeria, International and regional coopration and accountability, such as the CRPD reporting.
