NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES PRESS RELEASE 29 August 2025 NCPWD Partners with Sightsavers to Strengthen Staff Capacity, Ethics, and Professionalism In a bold step to strengthen institutional efficiency and promote professionalism, the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), in collaboration with Sightsavers Nigeria, has commenced a capacity building workshop for all staff of the Commission. The workshop is designed to enhance personnel skills, improve service delivery, and uphold the highest ethical standards in line with the Commission’s mandate to protect and promote the rights of over 35.5 million persons with disabilities in Nigeria. Speaking at the opening session, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, charged staff to take the training seriously, stressing that millions of Nigerians living with disabilities depend on the Commission’s efficiency, empathy, and professionalism. > “This Commission carries the hopes of over 35.5 million Nigerians with disabilities. Every action we take as staff members directly impacts their lives. That is why efficiency, ethics, and professionalism are not optional, they are our duty. I urge every participant here to embrace the knowledge being shared, internalize it, and apply it to your work. Our mission is too important to be taken for granted,” Hon. Gufwan said. He expressed deep appreciation to Sightsavers Nigeria for its consistent support, describing the organization as a committed partner in advancing disability inclusion across the country. On her part, Mrs. Esther Bature, Country Advocacy Coordinator representing Sightsavers Nigeria, reaffirmed the organization’s dedication to building the capacity of institutions serving persons with disabilities. > “True inclusion begins with strong institutions. By investing in the capacity of NCPWD personnel, we are investing in the future of millions of Nigerians with disabilities. Sightsavers remains committed to this partnership, ensuring that the Commission is equipped to deliver on its mandate with excellence,” she said. Also speaking, Dr. Adebayo Bukola, Technical Assistant to the Executive Secretary, encouraged participants to view the workshop as a transformational opportunity. > “This training is not just about acquiring new skills, it is about transforming the way we serve. Each of you is a change agent, and through your work, you can directly influence how society perceives and supports persons with disabilities. The Commission’s strength lies in its people, and I believe this program will unlock new levels of efficiency and professionalism,” Dr. Bukola noted. The capacity building workshop will cover key areas including ethics and accountability, disability rights, inclusive service delivery, leadership, and organizational efficiency.
