NCPWD Marks World Spinal Cord Injury Day: “Turning Challenges into Strength”

NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES PRESS RELEASE 5th September, 2025 NCPWD Marks World Spinal Cord Injury Day: “Turning Challenges into Strength” The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) joins the global community in commemorating World Spinal Cord Injury Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness, promoting prevention, and strengthening support for people living with spinal cord injuries. This year’s observance is a solemn reminder of the resilience and courage of millions of Nigerians and countless others around the world who live with spinal cord injuries, yet continue to rise above daily challenges with dignity and strength. The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Hon. Ayuba Burki Gufwan, described the day as an opportunity to reflect, to advocate, and to recommit to ensuring that persons with spinal cord injuries are not defined by their limitations, but by their extraordinary strength and contribution to society. > “Spinal cord injuries change lives in an instant, but they do not erase dreams, dignity, or potential. Behind every statistic is a human story, a son, a daughter, a parent, who deserves every chance to live fully and thrive. Today, we must look beyond the injury and see the person. At NCPWD, we reaffirm our commitment to breaking every barrier, challenging stigma, and building a Nigeria where no person with a spinal cord injury is left behind.” He further called on government agencies, the private sector, health professionals, and civil society to work together in expanding access to rehabilitation, mobility aids, emergency care, and employment opportunities for persons with spinal cord injuries. Spinal cord injuries affect thousands of Nigerians annually, often resulting from road traffic accidents, falls, and violence. Yet, with timely intervention, rehabilitation, and inclusive policies, those living with the condition can lead fulfilling and productive lives. The Commission emphasized that spinal cord injury prevention and care are not only medical issues, but matters of human rights, inclusion, and national development. As the world commemorates this day, the NCPWD urges Nigerians to stand in solidarity with persons living with spinal cord injuries, to celebrate their resilience, and to take action toward creating a society that upholds dignity, accessibility, and equal opportunity for all.
